Wooden strut: Yakshi

Nepal - Wood - Height 55 cm - 17th century

In Nepal, wood is a popular material for the construction of temples, as support for the eaves of a temple roof. The figure represents a Yakshi, a tree goddess associated with fertility and the spirit of nature. She is standing nonchalantly on a heavenly dwarf who is straining to support her weight by pressing down on the rocks below with his left hand. His right fist is pressed against his knee, and his head and torso are in an upright position. The Yakshi reaches up languorously to grasp a branch of the foliage above.
