9° Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje (1556 - 1603)

Tibet - gilded copper alloy - height 12cm - 4inc - 16th century

Seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus base and hands resting on his knees, wearing thick inner and outer robes with the borders incised , his meditative face and surmounted by his distinctive hat.

The Karmapa (Gyalwa Karmapa) "He who performs the action of Buddhist" or "Lord of the Buddhist", is head of the Karma Kagyu lineage of the Kagyu school more important (Wylie: bka 'rgyud), one of the four principal of Tibetan Buddhism.

The Karmapa embodies the active force of all the Buddhas and his birth was foretold already by Sakyamuni Buddha and Guru Rinpoche.
